NBAなどアメリカのスポーツのアリーナは、しょっちゅう移転の話が上がっている。それをネタにした嘘のニュース記事発見。題名は「国会議事堂に移転危機！」。補修工事だらけでつぎはぎだらけの国会議事堂を何とかしろよ、というネタとうまく合わさった毒舌＆ばかばかしい記事に仕上がっています。

Shaq's base, Nelson said, affects "everything that he does, from being able to run straight ahead, to go side-to-side, to pivoting, stuff that he does normally. Rebounding and coming down, he's got to be able to stabilize. That muscle is a very important muscle, and if that's weak then you've got a lot of other compensations.''

Shaq credits the Suns' training staff with extending his career. It employs a system called Optimum Performance Training, based on a scientific understanding of how different parts of the body help or hinder each other.

"A lot of these teams have got the old trainers, who I consider 'analog trainers,' and they just go with the stim [electric stimulation] and the sound [ultrasound],'' O'Neal said. "But that don't really work no more. Your body is like a building, and if certain things are off [in the foundation] then the whole thing's going to be off.

O'Neal is bitter that the Heat didn't diagnose the relationships between his muscle groups.

"They didn't see that,'' he said. "That's the stuff that you can't see in the MRI. So they would take MRIs and they wouldn't see anything. Because of what was going on, they would make excuses -- 'Oh, he's getting divorced, his career's over, he don't want to play ... he's faking.'

"I had a freaking pain right here,'' O'Neal said, grabbing below his right hip. "I'm sort of old school myself, so I'll suck it up a few days. But then if it all hurts, give me a shot. And then usually when the shot don't work, something else is wrong. But we were taking MRIs and nothing else was wrong. I went to a so-called expert in California and he didn't know what was wrong.''

O'Neal showed improvement in the first days of treatment.

"Originally, we were doing a couple of hours a day [of therapy and exercises],'' Harris said. "He even came back from the All-Star break early to get some extra work in before we got into that week of practice, which was the week that he ended up playing [in his Suns debut]. He put a lot of time in early, and now we manage it anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half a day of a combination of the manual therapy and the corrective exercises.''

"I've been here a month, I haven't had to take no drugs, I haven't had to get no shots,'' O'Neal said. "They touch me, they stretch me and I do real simple weights.''

「俺はパンツを脱いで、カップに小便をするように言われた。みんなが見ている前で、だ。小便は幸運なことにすぐに出た。去年は緊張しすぎて何分もかかったからな。係の人が何回もトイレの水を流したりしてくれたけど出なかった。出そうとしたけど、他の野郎に俺のオスカー・メイヤー（肉の会社の名前。ここではチ★コの意味。）をじっと見られると落ち着けない。今日は前回のように、じいさんの視線に気をとられることはなかった。俺は義務をしっかり果たした。」

「（スポーツ選手の薬物違反がニュースになっているけど）おかしいと思うのは、どうやったらあの検査をごまかせるんだ、ってことだ。PH（水素イオン指数）、体温、血色は検査される。パンツを脱いで、服もめくって、係の人の前でスリー・シクスティー（一回転ダンクのこと。ここでは真っ裸になる、の意味）をするんだぜ。Whizzinatorなんて使う余地はないぞ。ここで知らないやつのために説明しよう（俺が調べてやった）。Whizzinatorとはにせのペニスで、その中には他人の尿が入っている。だから一見、自分で小便をしているように見える。ありえないだろ。（この記事の上にある画像の人物で、NFLの選手）Onterrio Smithの事件を覚えているか？彼はこれを使ったせいで捕まったんだ。人生最大の恥さらしだったろうな。これを使って検査をパスしたやつっているんだろうか、と思ってしまう。ミゲル・テハダはどうなんだ？ビル・ロマノフスキーはどうだったんだ？Soumaila Samake（マリ出身の元NBA選手）は？あいつはステロイドで捕まっただろ。あいつ、黒色のWhizzinatorを使わずに黄土色のを使ったんじゃないだろうな（ちなみに黄土色のやつはLatinoという名前で販売されている）？あの検査をごまかすのは、俺には無理に思える。」

After that, I was asked to keep my pants down and to urinate into a cup while he watched. I was pretty lucky that I had no issues and it came quickly. Last year I was so nervous that I couldn't go for minutes. The guy kept flushing the toilet expecting that to help me along, but it didn't. Having another grown man stare at your Oscar Meyer while you attempt to go can be quite nerve racking. This time I was unfazed by the direct stares of the old man. I did what I had to do and it was done.

The funny thing about drug tests that I don't understand is how anybody could ever beat the system. They check the pH levels right there. They check the temperature right there. They check the color right there. The guy makes you drop your pants, lift up your shirt and do a 360 right in front of him, eliminating the possibility of a Whizzinator. For those that don't know (I looked it up), a Whizzinator is a fake penis that is somehow filled with someone else's urine and looks like you actually went #1 on your own. Crazy right? Remember Onterrio Smith (pictured above)? He was caught with one, which was probably the single most embarrassing thing to ever happen to him. It makes you wonder who has used this thing and passed? Did Miguel Tejada? Bill Romanowski? What about Soumaila Samake? He was caught with steroids. Did he use the "tan" colored Whizzinator instead of the "black" one? (By the way, they also have a color called "Latino.") Who knows? It would just seem that the test is impossible to beat.

When I was all done with my test, I was talking with the administrator. He told me that they expanded drug tests in Texas to include high school athletes and that they would be very busy in 2008 conducting over 44,000 tests. I said to him, almost accidentally out loud, "Wow, that's a lot of 360's." He laughed it off, but it's true. How could someone sign on to look at the privates of so many athletes? The guy last year said that he also checked out Amare Stoudemire and Tim Duncan. I thought it was odd that he would mention that. Maybe there is a certain glamour to this business. I asked him what led him to such a job and he said that he was a retired athletic trainer who wanted to stay busy and that this was the easiest way. Maybe it's a combination of money and the ability to say that only you and 20,000 women saw the real Wilt Chamberlain. Still, I'd have to think that the job is one of the worst on the planet, but that's just my opinion.

土曜日は一日中、NBAの英語記事を翻訳しました。1週間分のリキャップを一日で読むのに慣れてきました。Hoopshypeも2日分をまとめて読みました。

野球英語をさっさと訳し終えたいけど、Pの項目に80個くらい単語があるのでうんざりしてきました。訳す元気がなくなってきました。アイスホッケーのシーズンが終わる前にホッケーの単語リストを訳すつもりでした。でもこのPの項目のせいで激しくやる気がそがれています。

★日曜日
日曜日は自転車のブレーキの修理とチェーンの掃除をしました。苦戦しました。なんで自転車の説明書ってあんなにやる気がないんだ、携帯電話の説明書並みに分厚いのにしてくれたらいいのに、と思いました。

ブレーキのシューを買ったついでに、生まれて初めてサッカーくじのTOTOを買いました。自分で予想するタイプと、コンピューターに予想してもらうタイプがあるようでした。初心者なので調子にのらず、コンピューターに予想してもらうタイプのほうを買いました。銀行口座とか住所とか洗いざらい白状しないと買えないと思っていましたが、1秒で買えたので驚きました。

自分が並んでいる間、前で80代くらいの男性がtotoを買っていました。たぶん80代だと思います。あの腰の曲がり具合で、60代とは言わせねぇ。あの手の震え方で60代とは言わせねぇ。そんな男性がtotoを買っている姿を見てうれしくなりました。

並んでいる間、暇だったので、この男性、喜久雄（仮名）がなぜtotoを買うようになったのか推測していました。以下、そのとき頭の中で考えたことを書きます。

・・・ひょっとしたらこの男性の孫、隼人（仮名）は、高校時代を育英ですごし、その後プロからスカウトがかかるも大学進学を決意して上京、そしていろいろあって就職、そんな人生を送っているのかもしれない。「あの時プロの道に進んでいれば」と時々思いつつも現在は社会人として立派にやっているのかもしれない。隼人（仮名）は「育英で同期だった友達がJリーグのチームで働いててね、今はそのチームを応援しているんだ」と祖父に語ったのかもしれない。この80代の男性はそんな孫の話を聞いているうちにサッカーに興味を持ち、去年あたりからtotoを買う気になったのかもしれない・・・。

・・・もしくは喜久雄（仮名）が昔働いていた会社の元同僚で友達の邦夫（仮名、72歳）との、県立病院でたまたま一緒になったときの会話がきっかけなのかもしれない。そこの待合室で、邦夫（仮名）が「わし、囲碁の教室で子供らに囲碁を教えとるんですけどね、そこで一緒に教えてる方がね、サッカーくじにはまってるんですわ。toto言うやつでね。えぇ、スポーツ賭博ですわ、一言で言うたら。胴元？胴元は国です。国も借金かえしていかなあかんからいろいろやりよるんですね。それでね、（以下略）」という感じで話しかけてきたのがきっかけなのかもしれない・・・

・・・というようなことをレジで待ってる50秒の間に考えていました。つーか文章にしたら長っ。もはや日記じゃないよ。ジャンル変わってるよ。東京大学物語？

週刊Dスティーブンソン通信②（Dグッデンとひげバトル）

★発端（夏）
DグッデンとDスティーブンソンはオーランドに家があるらしく、お互いよく知っているらしい。そこで去年の夏に2人が会ったのがひげバトルのきっかけになった模様。

ひげを長く伸ばしている理由について、Dスティーブンソン「Dグッデンと賭けをしているんだ。彼のひげについてちょっと言ったら、彼が挑戦してきた。だから俺は「いいぜ」って答えた。彼が「どっちが最初にひげを剃ってしまうかな」と言ってきたんで、俺は「やろう」と言ったんだ。」

自分の外見について、スティーブンソン「映画''ティーン・ウルフ''みたいだろ。もしくはモーゼ。」

"I've got a bet with Drew Gooden," he said.

Yes, that's right, our very own DeShawn has made what we're calling an "undisclosed wager" with the formerly ducktailed Cavs forward Gooden, who began growing his own beard over the summer. Both guys live in Orlando, and they saw each other socially. Gooden had a beard, Stevenson made a comment, and so Gooden challenged him to grow facial hair of his own.

"So I said all right," Stevenson said. "He said 'who cuts it first,' I said let's do it," and the rest was history.

"Probably look like Teen Wolf," he said one time. "Probably Moses," he said another time. "Moses with an even cut."

Teammates came up with other metaphors.

"He's going into his Rocky mode, I guess," Caron Butler said. "Remember when Rocky was training to fight the Russian and he had the big beard and everything?"

SLAM's Lang Whitaker, of course, has already e-mailed Gooden to tell him he looks like Abraham Lincoln.

"I'm going to get Soulja Boy courtside seats and have him wear a DeShawn Stevenson jersey. Maybe (James) can have Jay-Z there since LeBron's all on his (shorts) anyway." Stevenson wasn't done. "And tell LeBron to cut that beard off and stop copying me."

"Looking back on it, I wish I didn't react the way I did," Iverson said of his exit. "Somebody lives their life in one place for so long, and goes through so many things there and not really wanting to leave and feel like you were forced out, it was tough for me to deal with.

Things went from bad to worse at Sydney Airport, when the former Chicago Bulls champion rebounder was questioned by Customs staff about the truthfulness of his entry card in to the country.

A Customs officer asked Rodman's assistant whether Dennis had read the form before he filled it out, and double-checked the basketballer had not had any criminal convictions.

The grandson of Serbian immigrants, Popovich majored in Soviet studies at the Air Force Academy. He then spent the early 1970s touring Europe with the Armed Forces team. Noting the balance of the Western Conference, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said before the game: “We’re two game out of first and we’re two games out of eighth.” With the conference so close, he predicted that home-court advantage would not be as big a factor in the playoffs. “The first seed could be the eighth and the eighth seed is as good as the first and that’s no exaggeration,” he said. “None of us is better than the other. So the seeds are really irrelevant this season more than any other time.”

接戦。爪を噛んではらはらしながら見守る、というようなニュアンス。

①死球。drilled, plunkedなども同義。
②勝ち試合の最後を締める投球。
③走者をアウトにすること。例・・・"Sizemore nailed him at the plate."（Cサイズモア、彼をアウトにしました。）

勝利を決定付けるような、素晴らしいパフォーマンスをした投手。例・・・"As the season has progressed, you can see that he looks forward to that 9th inning and he has been nails lately."（シーズンが進むにつれ、彼が9回を楽しみにしていること、そして最近のっているのがお分かりでしょう。）

①守備範囲の中で、一人の選手が届かないゾーン。守備のうまさの評価(zone rating)に使われる。またはフライが上がったときどの野手も届かないゾーン（Bermuda triangle とも言う）
②挟殺。

・ no room at the inn
満塁で、四球を出せない状況。ホテルの部屋は満室、というニュアンス。

・ no-no
ノーヒット試合や完封試合。

・ northpaw
右投手。サウスポーの逆。

・ NRI
スプリングトレーニングに召集された未登録の選手。Non-Roster Inviteeの略。若手やベテランが多い。

マジックナンバー。

・ make-up call
審判がある投球に関して誤審をしたと思った場合、そのあともう一回わざと誤審をして埋め合わせること。例えば、ある投球にストライクの判定を出したとする。しかしそれが実はボールだと審判が思った場合、そのあと、ボール球に対してあえてストライクの判定を出すとする。その2回目の判定をmake-up callという。普通、審判はこういうコールの存在を否定する。

・ make-up game
雨天順延の試合。普通、シーズン後半に行われる。両チームのプレーオフ進出に影響が出ない場合は、中止になる。

・ manufacturing runs
盗塁やヒットなどでこつこつ点を重ねること。small ballと同義。

・ masher
スラッガー。

スコアボードに1が並ぶこと。
